1/ Why are you interested in jazz music and when ?

Patrick: Once a lecturer brought in class with a CD. She asked us to close our eyes, and listen.
“I love you porgy…….” While none of us knew who was singing, everyone was reveling in the music. We, as teenage boys, started to imagine the face of the owner of this beautiful voice. I have to admit luckily our lecturer did not let us look at the CD cover. Cos she was Ella Fitzgerald at the end….…(laugh). Anyway, this song takes me in….

Bon: It was about Gershwin for me as well. Way back to my University life, when I was preparing for my exam and getting bored. I listened to the “Best of George Gershwin” album. After listening to songs like “I got rhythm”, “Someone to watch over me”, I immediately knew that jazz music is my cup of tea.

Paul: We’ve strolled around between several kinds of music style including Pop, Rock, Funk, Blues..etc… , and finally I’ve found jazz as my life goal cuz’ I can find the richest combination in both harmonization and melodic approach in jazz music structure.

2/ How do you all learn jazz music and difficulties need to overcome..

Theory is the first problem to solve, and then how to translate our emotions from heart to fingers…
There’re always elements in jazz music that makes us feel both confused and inspired, and yet it takes time to understand. But we trumpet the genius of Miles Davis when he said "Do not fear mistakes, there are none.". The most difficult thing is about our attitude. It is not about playing a perfect piece. It never is.

3/ What are the difficulties of being jazz musicians in Hong Kong? The environment, education, resources, support, audience etc...

There's always a saying that, "Music is only a business in Hong Kong". When most Hong Kong people are incepted with all the commercial music from TV and radio, it is not easy to be aware of a group of musicians who play jazz.
There are always many alternatives in life that we could think of, and yet we may not be aware of them. Jazz musicians are adventurers who try to show us all how life could be in such a different way. It would take time to let such a seed grow in a society, but I am optimistic that more people would join the adventure with jazz musicians, when they knows more about life sooner or later.

4/ Your favorite jazz muscians and jazz works...

Paul : Joe Pass, George Benson, Bireli Lagrene are my all time favorite guitarists, and I love their works as well.
Bon: George Gershwin, Oscar Peterson, Joshua Redman, Cannonball Adderley and Paquito D'Rivera.

Favorite albums: Oscar Peterson's "Saturday Night at the Blue Note", Cannonball Adderley Quintet in Chicago, Paquito D'Rivera's "Reunion"
Patrick: Progy and Bess, Ella and Louis, Chet Baker is my all time favorite. Jeff Hamilton and his "Pair of Brushes", Buddy Rich’s "Stroke of Course", Gene Krupa’s "Sing Sing Sing"…

5/ What are you going to play in coming concert?
Standards, lots of inspired notes and pop songs may be.

爵士樂的發展已過百年，在不同的地區國家散播萌芽，在不同的文化土壤下孕育衍化出各自獨特的爵士樂風貌。現代的與傳統的爵士樂有很不同的時代性取向，新的媒體、世界文化共融等觀念糅合了本土文化特質。爵士樂除了在美國這個發源和根據地繼續燦爛外，亦在亞洲非洲等地發展出精采的音樂語言。而歐洲更是緊貼美國，呈現出更多元化的面貌。一場金融海嘯把全球最大的爵士樂組織，美國的IAJE(International Association for Jazz Educators)拖垮，國際爵士樂盛事由德國的Jazz Ahead取代了。甚至希臘債務危機又令歐洲諸國緊縮開支。爵士樂的生存像已受到嚴重威脋....

Make Jazz New

Jazz is not dead; but jazz will be dying if it only moves backward and indulges in its glorious history.

Jazz has to move forward and beyond the boundaries defining jazz as jazz. In this direction, the Hong Kong International Jazz Festival 2010 will stage more than 10 jazz groups from all corners of the world from 3 to 9 October 2010, including Rusconi (Swizterland), Steinar Rakens Trio (Norway), Logic (Australia), etc.

While moving towards the European Jazz, we will not forget the American Jazz. The American guitar hero Stanley Jordan is also on our list.

Steinar Raknes Trio (Norway)

Strongly influenced by latin american music, the Norwegian Steinar Raknes Trio merges with tangos, bossa nova ballads and elements from norwegian folk music.

Logic (Australia)

The Australian group Logic aims to present its own unique, contemporary sound whilst preserving the spontaneous and interactive approach of the jazz tradition. Its compositions stem from diverse musical influences, including jazz, drum ‘n’ bass, Latin, classical, folk and pop music.

香港著名結他手孫立功老師畢業於美國荷李活 G.I.T結他研究學院,曾於 The Grove School of Music修讀現代作曲編曲。孫氏是一位資深專業結他演奏家 ,現為愛美唱片公司監制、美國百得唱片公司音樂顧問及作曲家。

孫立功有多年演奏經驗 ,曾作世界巡回演出，而且具有二十多年教學經驗,曾指導不少職業樂師、歌星及明星等；不少學生經已成材,並擔任唱片監制,從事作曲、編曲及音槳制作。更有部份學生榮獲美國音樂學院獎學金遠赴美國深造。

有一種歌聲，仿如擁有上帝注入的無窮韻味，無需矯情造作，沒有花腔修飾，就能感動人心。五十年代的爵士巨星Nat King Cole就是當中的代表。

1965年，一代巨星殞落，多年來樂迷無法忘記這把磁性的歌聲與那個年代的美好。可幸，其後我們仍然可以從其女兒Natalie Cole充滿感染力的歌聲中，細味往昔時代的風韻、情懷。

Natalie Cole與音樂的緣份自出世一刻開始，父親 Nat King Cole是一代爵士巨星，而母親Maria Cole是著名的管弦樂隊歌手。得天獨厚的Natalie承繼了父親的優質音樂細胞，年僅15歲就推出首張唱片Inseparable，並成為史上第一位獲得格林美最佳新人獎的黑人女歌手。

Natalie的音樂結合了流行樂、R&B與爵士的風格。幾十年來，她迷人的聲線唱出許多真摯情歌﹕This Will Be、Mr. Melody、 Mona Lisa、Autumn Leaves、When I Fall In Love、Sophisticated Lady、 L.O.V.E、 Miss You Like Crazy等等。今日，這些歌曲皆已成為全球樂迷心目中的經典，也成就了許多的人生故事。

在Natalie的經典情歌之中，最令人印象深刻的莫過於Unforgettable。這首歌的原唱者是Nat King Cole。Natalie取材父親的錄音，於1991年利用電腦技術與父親跨代合唱。“Unforgettable in every way; And forever more, that's how you'll stay…..”也許正正道出了Natalie 對父親的心聲。

跨越時空，與逝去的父親合唱情歌，何等溫馨浪漫。今年6月18日， Natalie Cole首度來港獻唱，屆時她會在演唱會舞台上呈現與父親Nat King Cole跨代合唱的一幕，適逢父親節，讓我們隨著Natalie溫柔的歌聲，與父親渡過這溫馨的一晚。

香港爵士樂會將舉行爵士樂紀錄片《爵士群像》免費特別場！

美國領事館及香港藝術館合辦「美國電影學院20/20計劃」電影節(詳情請看 http://www.hkac.org.hk/tc/afi_project.php)，香港爵士樂會獲邀優先放映其中的爵士樂紀錄片《爵士群像》！本片導演Peter Vogt更特別為我們舉行放映後座談會，與各位分享交流。

HKJA is honored to hold a FREE screening of a jazz documentary ICONS AMONG US exclusively for HKJA friends.

The U.S. Consulate General in Hong Kong, in collaboration with the Hong Kong Arts Centre, will bring the AFI PROJECT 20/20 film festival to Hong Kong from April 19-29, 2010 (Pleas see: http://www.hkac.org.hk/en/afi_project.php). HKJA is privileged to hold a preliminary screening of the documentary film on American jazz titled ICONS AMONG US for you! What more is; Peter Vogt, the director, will be available to have a post-screening sharing with us!

“David Murray’s Black Saint Quartet

“David Murray’s Black Saint Quartet will be on tour around Asia for 3 ? must be seen ? performances. They will be performing 2 shows in Jakarta on March 5th & 7th at the prestigious “Java Jazz Festival”, before hitting for the “Hong Kong Arts Festival” on March 9th.

Though the latest album of David Murray and the Black Saint Quartet, entitled ? Sacred Ground ? was released in 2007, in which the shaded voice of Cassandra Wilson interpreting the words written by Ishmael Reed can be heard, its impact still resonates all around the world. This album features 2 key members of the BSQ, Murray’s old friends, the bassist Ray Drummond and the percussionist Andrew Cyrille and illustrates to the greatest the open attitude of the saxophonist.
This is not only jazz built upon its old traditional roots, but also a new open and polyrythmic jazz.

This crowning achievement has reached its excellence with the arrival of Lafayette Gilchrist, as a guest artist replacing the late John Hicks.”
