Simply overwhelming! And I mean this four-part CD released in 1964 is surely the next best thing to trying to fathom the supreme spiritual passions Coltrane has. Displaying formidable technique as usual, Coltrane goes about skirting the most turbulent of thoughts and emotions presumably born from his meager past.
Then the soft playing pianist McCoy comes on the scene, and by taking on a parallel prominence, eventually put our minds and spirit to peace, broadening our horizons along the way. Coltrane emerges afresh and I feel so instantly empowered when Psalm - the last part - is in the air.

As Michael Cuscuna said in 1995, this four-part suite is simple in construction and rich in content, and its beauty and appeal are timeless. And I would add, it lifts spirits.
