"Play" is more than a Fusion work. No doubt its usual rock-oriented, dynamite attack will not disappoint any Fusion enthusiasts. STERN could of course challenge the forceful drumming of Dennis Chambers like in "Link". However, STERN wishes to go further.
He is no longer dissatisfied in being a mere Fusion and jazz-rock musician. He wishes to further affirm his signature by challenging two guitarists, of similar style (John SCOTFIELD) and contrasting style (Bill FRISELL).

The result is the opposite sounds more apparent than the similar. STERN's hard- edge sounds become more distinguishing among FRISELL's atmospheric style than in SCOTFIELD's slippery style. See if you could recognize STERN's guitar murmuring with FRISELL in "Frizz" and bursting with SCOTFIELD in "Outta Town".

To prove himself a master of originality, both in style and sounds, duelling with two other hot and cool masters is therefore the main theme of "Play". It also marks the STERN's less reliance on his fame as a Fusion guitarist.
