William Ellis is at the vanguard of music photographers and is widely recognised as having created an important document of the contemporary jazz scene in Africa, Europe and American.
His contribution to the culture was acknowledged by the American Jazz Museum in Kansas City in 2005 when he was invited to produce the inaugural international exhibition. He was invited to return in 2008 to contribute to the 'Jazz in Black and White: Bebop and Beyond' exhibition.
Photographs by William Ellis were also selected to be shown in a programme of exhibitions supporting Jazz appreciation organised by the Smithsonian Institute in Washington DC .
He was the Guest Visual Artist at Jazz Festivals in Cork, Glasgow and Northsea Jazz Festival in Hague and his work has been featured in many international exhibitions and events throughout the United Kingdom - including the Modern Works on Paper Exhibition at the Royal Academy of Arts London, Amsterdam, Bremen, Cape Town, Havana, Las Vegas, Los Angeles, New York City, Orlando, Toronto.
William Ellis serves on the committee of the Milt Hinton Award for Excellence in Jazz Photography along with his peers - including one of the great photographers who helped to define the genre - Herman Leonard.
His work continues shooting the front and backstage at the world's legendary clubs and festivals.
Ellis' insightful portraits and exquisite still life images play their part in creating the visual heritage of today's international scene.
