Upcoming Activities of Hong Kong Jazz Association at Kubrick

"Life is like a beautiful music piece which is full of ups and downs. Sometimes we swing when we're winning. Sometimes we mourn for the stormy weather. It's those ups and downs that fill our lives with colors. It is so amazing that we want to paint it with our melody and rhythm, from the color of funk and swing, to the color of pop and bossa. That's how the fellows of Up n Down Quintet gets together. The Quintet now composes of drummer Patrick, pianist Veron, saxophonist Bon, guitarist Paul and bassist Dereck."

　　爵士樂的發展已過百年，在不同的地區國家散播萌芽，在不同的文化土壤下孕育衍化出各自獨特的爵士樂風貌。現代的與傳統的爵士樂有很不同的時代性取向，新的媒體、世界文化共融等觀念糅合了本土文化特質。爵士樂除了在美國這個發源和根據地繼續燦爛外，亦在亞洲非洲等地發展出精采的音樂語言。而歐洲更是緊貼美國，呈現出更多元化的面貌。 一場金融海嘯把全球最大的爵士樂組織，美國的IAJE(International Association for Jazz Educators)拖垮，國際爵士樂盛事由德國的Jazz Ahead取代了。甚至希臘債務危機又令歐洲諸國緊縮開支。爵士樂的生存像已受到嚴重威?....

The Paper Jazz Exhibition

This exhibition displays totally 26 artistic and colorful posters with a theme on portraits of jazz masters and illustrates an array of jazz heroes in the United States. Media of jazz performance being longitude and representative jazz musicians being latitude, it weaves the outline of this exhibition which aims to depict foundation of jazz music and deliver a welcome message to the public of Hong Kong.

With its deep root in Africa, jazz music becomes a part of American culture and its revolutionary impact on music development in contemporary world deserves our serious attention and respect. The paintings and photographs are wonderful works created by talented artists with their unique interpretation of portraits. A glimpse at the portraits of jazz masters tells us mesmerizing stories of how legends happen and jazz music evolves in different eras. We hope this exhibition could let the public have a better understanding of jazz music.

是次paper jazz展出二十六張海報，形式是以爵士樂界典堂級大師為主題的繪畫及照片，展覽的輪廓以爵士樂的表演媒體為經，其代表人物為緯，編織了當代的爵士樂歷史。插圖造型色彩斑爛，既有具象立體風格亦有抽象意境，顯示出畫家獨特的視野。刻畫人物的背後是各種傳奇的奮鬥，他們締造了豐富多采的爵士樂世界，讓我們今天得以細味其成果；攝影照片留下了大師的倩影神韻，凝結了的時間好似一道時光隧道，好讓我們有機會感受現?的精采表演。我們期望透過是次展覽，大眾能夠對爵士樂有更深刻的了解。
